Driver's Licence

spHOW TO GET YOUR DRIVER'S LICENCE

To obtain your licence first purchase a Drivers Handbook from any post office, newsagency or Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) Customer Service Centre.

Read the book and sit the learner's written test at any DTEI Customer Service Centre. You can also practice the theory exam on the RAA website www.raa.net.

On passing the written test you will receive a Learner's Permit and The Driving Companion. This is full of information for the novice driver. Please read this thoroughly.

Congratulations on obtaining your learner's permit. You have now taken the first steps towards embarking on a long driving career. As a driver on the road, you accept a whole range of new responsibilities. Those responsibilities include the well being and safety of your passengers, other drivers, motorcyclists, bicycle riders, pedestrians, the environment and yourself.

To prepare yourself for these responsibilities associated with driving a motor vehicle, it is recommended that you seek professional tuition when learning to drive, by choosing an ADTA member. This tuition from a government licensed Motor Driving Instructor should occur together with practice from a Qualified Supervising Driver.

The requirements to obtain a P1 licence are that you must have your Learners Permit for at least 6 months, and you must complete a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience including ten hours at night. This driving experience can be achieved with your Driving Instructor who can teach you safe driving strategies including the correct sequences and techniques from the start, you can then practice these with your Qualified Supervising Driver. Hence your lessons and the 50 hours can start as soon as you have your learners permit. You must ensure that you fill in the Record of Driving Hours in your Driving Companion refer to green tab section  ) and get your Instructor and Supervising Driver to also sign it.

To assist you in obtaining your licence, you have the following two options.

spOPTION 1: A practical driving test conducted by an Authorised Instructor.

This option requires you, the learner driver, to arrange a practical Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) through an AUTHORISED INSTRUCTOR. The driving skills and abilities on which you may be assessed in the VORT practical test are listed in the Driving Companion. All your practice driving hours will need to be written in your Record of Driving Hours in your Driving Companion. You must achieve at least 90% in the VORT test to pass. (All 5 slow speed manoeuvers are recorded at 2% each if successful.) You must not commit any immediate fail items ( major law breach, loss of control or require assistance). Whilst it could be possible to pass a VORT without having lessons from a Driving Instructor, we recommend that you obtain lessons with an Instructor as many Qualified Supervising Drivers do not know the correct skills and sequences needed to pass the VORT.

Choosing this option offers the following:

  • The practical VORT may be commenced between the hours of 7.00am and 7.00pm or sunset ( whichever is the earlier time ).

  • The practical VORT may be taken on any day except Christmas Day and Good Friday.

  • The practical VORT will be conducted on an authorised VORT test route which has been designed to include most of the driving skills contained in the Driving Companion.

    and

  • The practical VORT will result in either a 'pass' or 'fail' and is an objective testing system based on your correct responses to road and traffic conditions.

You are not permitted to undertake a practical test with any Driving Instructor who has contributed to your training. Either you or your training instructor must book your practical VORT test with an authorised instructor at least three full days prior to the date of the test. If you fail the test you may not resist the test for 14 days.

spOPTION 2: Competency Based Training Course (CBT).

This option is the recommended choice when learning to drive. It does not involve a practical VORT test even though the training covers the test content. It allows you the learner driver, to undertake training through an Accredited Instructor. The ACCREDITED INSTRUCTOR will conduct your training in accordance with the Competency Based Training (CBT) Course as laid down by The DTEI. As you successfully complete each task in the CBT course, the achievement of each task will be recorded in your Driving Companion refer to yellow tab section  ) by your Accredited Instructor, who will also fill out your Record of 50 Driving Hours in the  green tab section  of your Driving Companion.

Successful performance in all 30 tasks will result in the training course being completed and the issue of a Certificate of Competency to obtain your driver's licence. You can then obtain your P1 Licence if you have completed your 50 hours of driving and held your learners permit for at least 6 months.

Note:

(a) You are not compelled to complete the CBT course. At anytime during the CBT course you may select Option 1 ( the VORT test ).

(b) You may change instructors at anytime during the CBT course. The new Accredited instructor will be required to check that you can perform all of the tasks signed off previously by your last accredited Instructor.

(c) The Driving Companion remains your property, which must be presented to the Accredited Instructor at the beginning of each training session. A Road Safety Officer from Transport SA, on request may inspect your Driving Companion at the beginning or end of any training session.

Choosing this option has the following advantages:

  • There is no formal test involved. You are assessed on each task as you learn.

  • The training is designed to cover all aspects of good driving behaviour and the development of good driving attitudes.

  • The training allows you to learn at your own rate with out a 'test' deadline.

  • There is no 'pass' or 'fail' when each task is assessed. If you are unsuccessful in any assessment of a task, the instructor can re-train you and then re-assess your performance again in that task within the same driving lesson.
  • This CBT course will provide you with efficient, structured training in a wide variety of driving experiences including country driving.

  • Drivers graduating from this program will be able to demonstrate the confidence and competency needed for today's road and traffic conditions.

  • Entries by your Instructor in the Driving Companion will provide you with accurate information on your progress in the CBT course. The records completed by your instructor will also give valuable help and guidance when you are practicing with friends or family members. Practicing using information from the Driving Companion can reduce your cost of training.

spOVERSEAS CONVERSION OF LICENCE
